As you pass through fire as you pass through fire
trying to remember its name
When you pass through fire licking at your lips
you cannot remain the same
And if the building’ burning
move towards that door
but don’t put the flames out
There’s a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out—Lou Reed “Magic and Loss”

A good friend of mine’s Uncle died recently and his passing has put me in an introspective mood. One of the things that I keep thinking of are all the things he never got to see, and all the things that none of us will ever get to see.

On another note, I have been following an NPR series about public libraries in America, and have found myself growing more and more depressed. I was brought up to believe that public libraries were supposed to be literary and historic archives that kept everything. So people have begun to use the excuse of filtering “unimportant” materials out due to lack of demand. While newspapers are being microfiched, many works of fiction are simply being sold off. Who can say what “works” will later end up being important in a historical context? While I am in support of libraries, I don’t think that they are being treated nearly as well as they should be.

For a blast of sarcasm….

The President of the United States is touting an idea for a $75,000 tax deduction for small businesses who buy an SUV. This tax write off will be able to be taken on your very next tax return. Hmmm, it costs about $15 to incorporate yourself as a small business in Indiana, to make it look good I could float a few friends a couple hundred dollars over the next few months to give back to me as business revenue….Hmmm, I wonder if Lincoln Navigators come in black? And I wonder if the IRS would be pissed to realize that they bought it for me?

Who voted for Dubya again? Oh yeah, it was the Supreme Court wasn’t it…
